Hemorrhoidal Disease

It is defined as the dilation of the hemorrhoidal plexus located in the terminal part of the rectum, anal canal, and anus. From an anatomical standpoint, they are classified as internal and external.

In Mexico, its exact prevalence is unknown, but at least 5% of the general population exhibits symptoms related to this disease.

Hemorrhoids are the most common cause of rectal bleeding. Sedentary occupations, straining during work or sports, standing for prolonged periods, and certain dietary habits (most cases of constipation are due to a low-fiber diet) are other factors involved in the formation of hemorrhoids.

Symptoms of hemorrhoidal disease include rectal bleeding, a painful mass, anal swelling, discharge, a sensation of uncleanliness, and itching. The most frequent complaint is painless bleeding.

Painless anal bleeding typically presents as dripping or splashing in the toilet bowl, a bloody streak on the stool after defecation, or staining on the toilet paper. Over time, hemorrhoids tend to prolapse, leading to spontaneous bleeding unrelated to bowel movements.

Secondary anemia occurs if the bleeding is prolonged enough to cause chronic anemia and its accompanying symptoms (fatigue, paleness, headache).
